Weekend Edition: September 17


VVA/FORT STEWART POW/MIA CEREMONY, Friday:

Community Members are invited to the 2015 POW/MIA Observance ceremony, 6:00 p.m. tomorrow at Marne Garden, hosted by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 789 and supported by the 3rd Infantry Division, and Fort Stewart.  Pre-ceremony music begins at 5:30 p.m. and refreshments will follow the event.  Guest Speaker is Task Force Marne Commander Brigadier General Jim Blackburn.  Uniform for E7 and above is ASU and Service cap.  E6 and below will wear beret with ASUs.  The ceremony honors those held as prisoners of war and missing in action during the Vietnam War and upholds the Army's ethos that we will never leave a comrade behind.


DPW OFFICE CLOSURE, Friday:
The Directorate of Public Works will be closed for Organization Day. Customers will be able to contact the work order desk for any work orders or emergencies at 912-767-2883 for Fort Stewart and 912-315- 4003 for HAAF.  All key personnel in the organization will be able to be reached by blackberry.
 FSGA TRAFFIC WARNING FOR GATE 8 CLOSURE and VETERAN's PARKWAY ROAD CLOSURE, Saturday: 

Commuters are encouraged to use caution on Fort Stewart as road work is planned for Veteran's Parkway between Bultman Ave. and Gate 8. Gate 8 will be closed and will reopen September 20 at normal hours. Traffic control devices will be displayed for the duration of the road closure.  Motorists are encouraged to avoid this area to minimize traffic congestion and be alert to changes in traffic patterns.  For more information call DPW, Jim Maddox at 912-767-5027.

 

HUNTER PX SECURITY GATE CLOSURE, Monday:

The security gate inside of the Hunter PX Main Store will be closed from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. for repairs. For more information, call 912-352-8380.

FMWR EVENTS

 
GRIDIRON CHALLENGE, Fridays:

If you enjoy picking weekly NFL winners, and want to see how your skill matches up with others, the Gridiron Challenge every Friday from 5-7:00 p.m. in Warriors Lounge at Club Stewart is made for you.  There’s no admission charge, but you must be 18 to play and 21 or older to drink. Each week, the person who picks the most winners will win a prize. The total of wins will be kept on file and after 17 weeks, a prize of $400 cash will be awarded to the person with the most winning picks for the season. For more information, call 912-767-4717.

 

YOUTH CENTER FAVORITE TEAM JERSEY DANCE PLANNED, Friday:   

A Youth Center Favorite Team Jersey Dance will be held from 7-10:00 p.m. at the Youth Fitness Center, Bldg. 7338. The dance will feature a live DJ, light refreshments, games and door prizes. SHOW SUPPORT FOR FINAL ROUND OF STEWART/HUNTER OPERATION RISING STAR COMPETITION, Friday:

The final round of the Stewart/Hunter Operation Rising Star competition will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Thunder Run. There’s no charge to watch the competition. First prize is $750 and a chance to advance in the Army-wide competition.  Second prize is $350 and third $200. Family Readiness Groups or units are eligible to win the Spirit Award -- $300 toward their unit funds – or other prizes, regardless of whether they have a competitor in the competition. STEWART "STRONGMAN/STRONGWOMAN" COMPETITION PLANNED, Saturday:           

Registration is under way for the Strongman/Strongwoman Competition at Johnson Fitness Center, Bldg. 8437. Cost is $15 per person. Sign-up at Johnson or Newman Fitness Centers. Weigh-in is at 8:30 a.m., competition at 10 a.m. Open to Active Duty, retirees and DA civilians, who will compete in five events: Tire Flip, Keg Toss, Stone Carry, Farmers Walk, and Deadlifts. Awards presented to top finishers in each of four weight classes (men: 210 and below, 210 and above; women 165 and below, 165 and above). For more information, call 912-767-3031. 

 

JOIN US FOR 12TH ANNUAL BLUES, BREWS & BBQ FESTIVAL, Saturday:

Hinesville Area Arts Council hosts the Blues, Brews & BBQ, a free community event with a BBQ competition and sales, sweet tea competition, a variety of beer, family fun and music.  The festival will be in Downtown Hinesville (behind Justice Center on Main Street) from 1-11:30 p.m. This year's headliner is Janiva Magness, who is the 2nd only female blues artist to have won the B.B. JOIN THE TAILGATING FUN AT LIBERTY COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL, Friday:

It’s a tailgate party before the homecoming game at Donell Woods Stadium in Hinesville. The party includes face painting, cheering, music, dancing, an art raffle, food and much more from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Bring your tent and lawn chairs to relax before the game. CULTURAL CELEBRATION, FESTIVAL PLANNED, Saturday, Sunday Since 1990, the Ocmulgee Indian Celebration has fostered public awareness of their rich heritage with the community. This year’s celebration will take place each day from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Ocmulgee National Monument located at 1207 Emery Highway in Macon, Ga.
